change is one of five strategies the Law Society is putting into action to create
awareness and engagement in the professions and to break down barriers faced by
racialized lawyers and paralegals.
To advance this
strategy, the Law Society has revised its Continuing Professional Development
Requirement to include a requirement to complete three Professionalism Hours of
accredited programming focused on equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI Hours),
by the end of 2020. Licensees will be
required to complete one EDI Hour per year of accredited programming
thereafter. EDI Hours count towards the
licensee’s Professionalism Hours for the year in which they are completed.
The Law Society has begun accrediting programs (see below). In addition,
to assist licensees, the Law Society is developing a free, three-hour
accredited program, to be launched in late 2018. The program will consist of a
series of self-directed, on-line learning modules. The Law Society is
also developing resources to assist legal workplaces in designing and
delivering their own three-hour programs.

criteria for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Professionalism Hours (EDI Hours). Accredited programs can be identified by
the EDI accredited logo.
