Janet E. Minor elected Treasurer of the Law Society 

Janet E. Minor has been elected to lead the Law Society as its 65th Treasurer. Treasurer Minor has worked in public law since 1977. Up until her election, she was general counsel in the Constitutional Law Branch of Ontario's Ministry of the Attorney General. Treasurer Minor succeeds former Treasurer Thomas G. Conway.

New bencher elected

Jeffrey Lem of Toronto was elected as bencher at June Convocation. Mr. Lem is a solicitor who practises real estate law and allied disciplines such as secured lending and insolvency. He is a partner with Miller Thomson LLP. Mr. Lem was elected to fill the vacancy created by the election of Janet E. Minor as Treasurer.

The Honourable Stephen T. Goudge, QC, appointed to Law Society Tribunal 

Convocation approved the appointment of The Honourable Stephen T. Goudge, QC, to the Hearing and Appeal Divisions of the Law Society Tribunal for a term of two years. Mr. Goudge recently retired from the Court of Appeal for Ontario.  He also received an honourary LLD at the Law Society's Call to the Bar ceremony on June 19.

By-Law 11 amended re: payment of costs 

Convocation amended By-Law 11 [Regulation of Conduct, Capacity and Professional Competence] to implement the Law Society's authority to automatically suspend a licensee for failure to pay regulatory proceedings costs and to permit licensees to apply for an extension of the time to pay costs. The cost enforcement policy was approved in principle at June 2012 Convocation. An amendment to the Law Society Act was required to implement the policy. Bencher Election Working Group delivers report 

Convocation approved the Bencher Election Working Group's recommendation to extend the time for the opening of voting following the preparation of the voters' list. The working group will return to Convocation with proposed amendments to By-Law 3 [Benchers, Convocation and Committees] to implement the policy.

The working group also reported to Convocation on its review of additional election process matters, including the results of the consultation on the regional bencher election scheme. No changes to the scheme were recommended. Full report.

Human Rights Monitoring Group interventions approved 

Convocation approved the Human Rights Monitoring Group's request for interventions in the following cases:

  • Lawyer Mahienour El-Massry - Egypt
  • Lawyer Rashid Rehman - Pakistan

The following benchers were re-appointed to the Proceedings Authorization Committee for a one year term: Paul Schabas (Chair), Michelle Haigh, Jacqueline Horvat, Gerald Sheff, Alan Silverstein and Peter Wardle.
