Financial assistance for lawyer Licensing Process candidates reviewed

The Law Society's current repayable allowance program should continue to apply to unpaid Articling and Law Practice Program candidates, according to a report from the Professional Development and Competence Committee. The report also stated that the program should be promoted to ensure candidates are aware of this option and that its repayment may be forgiven in certain circumstances.

The Committee undertook to review financial assistance options for lawyer Licensing Process candidates, including establishing a bursary, following a report to Convocation in November 2013, on the implementation of the Pathways Pilot Project. Full report.

Law Society marks end of J.S. Denison Fund

The last grant from the J.S. Denison Fund, which assisted impoverished lawyers, candidates and their families, was approved at November Convocation. All money in the fund has now been distributed. The fund was established under the terms of the will of former Treasurer John Shirley Denison, KC. Born in 1870, Denison was called to the Bar in 1892, and practised in Toronto. He was Treasurer of the Law Society from 1944-47 and died in 1951. More information.

Federation of Law Societies' report received

Convocation received a report from its Federation of Law Societies' Council representative, Treasurer Emeritus Laurie Pawlitza, on the Federation's meetings and conference held in Halifax in October 2014. The focus of the conference was access to justice and included an innovative program of learning and discussion on various aspects of this subject. Full report.

Rules of Professional Conduct amended

Convocation approved minor amendments to the Rules of Professional Conduct. Full report. 


Convocation approved appointments to committees, the Hearing Division of the Law Society Tribunal, and the Law Foundation of Ontario Board of Trustees. Motion.

Deemed Call process

Convocation decided against expanding the Deemed Call process as recommended in the Professional Development and Competence committee report. Full report.
