Call for comment: Options for Enhanced Governance Effectiveness

The Law Society’s Governance Task Force is conducting a review to ensure that the Law Society’s governance structure enables effective oversight for the Law Society as it fulfills its mandate and meets its accountabilities as a public interest regulator.

The Task Force would like to hear from lawyers, paralegals, stakeholders and the public about potential governance changes for the Law Society.

Options under consideration to enhance the Law Society’s governance include:

  • smaller size board (Convocation) for the Law Society
  • changes to the length of the terms for the Treasurer and Benchers
  • new terminology that better reflects the Law Society’s governance structure.

Call for Comment paper discusses the work of the Task Force and its areas of focus, and includes specific questions on the options under consideration.

While not part of the call for comment, the Task Force is also considering a revised committee structure (including the number, size and composition of committees) and potential changes to the frequency of Convocation and committee meetings.

The Task Force has made no final recommendations and encourages all lawyers and paralegals to consider the questions and provide their views. Input from the public is also encouraged and welcome.

This feedback will assist the Task Force in determining its recommendations for Convocation’s consideration. The Task Force plans to report to Convocation by the end of 2018 with recommended changes.

The Governance Task Force provided a report to Convocation outlining key findings and next steps under its the mandate of ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in Law Society governance as one of Convocation’s strategic priorities.

May 2017

Convocation approved the Governance Task Force’s recommendation to change the Bencher election process, so there is a single election date for the lawyer and paralegal Bencher elections, starting on April 30, 2019.

The Governance Task Force was established by Convocation, at the request of the Treasurer, to review and make recommendations in regard to the Law Society's governance structure.

The work of the Governance Task Force 2016 supports Convocation's strategic priority to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of the Law Society's governance methods.
