Biographical Sketch
George Arthur Johnston was born in Brooklin, Ontario, on April 27th, 1892. He attended the University of Toronto, where he received a BA degree in 1914 and was admitted to Osgoode Hall Law School that same year. Johnston was called to the Bar in 1919 following military service during the First World War. Johnston was appointed a King's Counsel in 1946. Johnston served as Chief Librarian of the Law Society of Upper Canada from 1939 to 1965. Johnston received an honorary LL.D. degree from York University in 1981. He served as President of the American Association of Law Libraries and as Executive Secretary of the Canadian Bar Association. Johnston died in Toronto on July 5th, 1993.

Fonds consists of records maintained by George A. Johnston. Included are photographs of J.A.R. Mason in military uniform, luncheon events, and Johnston reading in a tent. The fonds also includes two certificates promoting the rank of J.A.R. Mason during the First World War, and a certificate appointing Johnston a King's Counsel.

Scope and Content
Series consists of two certificates of military qualification promoting the rank of J.A.R. Mason during the First World War. The first certifies that Mason attained the rank of lieutenant. The second certifies that Mason attained the rank of captain. The series also includes a certificate appointing Johnston a King's Counsel in 1946.
