Biographical Sketch
William Hamilton Ponton was born in Scotland, the son of Mungo Ponton, surgeon, and Grace Ponton. He married Selina P. Hanwell on November 8th, 1870. William Ponton apprenticed from 1828 to 1831 with George Cameron, a solicitor from Inverness, Scotland. Ponton immigrated to Canada shortly after the apprenticeship was completed. He was living in the Town of York (Toronto) in 1831, and from 1841 onwards, appears to have been based in Belleville, Victoria District, later Hastings County. He was admitted as a student-at-law by the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1850 and was called to the Bar in 1856. Ponton was appointed a court clerk, court register, and electoral returning officer.
