During this period, Howland visited China, Africa, and various European countries, including England and Germany. There are nine diaries in total, detailing daily agendas, people and places encountered, and financial records of expenditures. Several include translations of basic phrases, and pronunciation guides, while others include calculations of milage travelled. The diary which documents Howland's trip to Germany during the summer of 1935 (file 994001-4-2) is especially detailed, including daily records of expenditure, addresses of those he stayed with, and notes which follow the rise of the Nazi movement, including conversations he had with local citizens. The series also includes items Howland collected on his travels, including receipts, passenger lists, brochures, postcards, and other material.
