Biographical Sketch
William Lynn Smart was born in England. His father, John Smart (fl. 1818), practiced law in London, England. William and his brothers Robert Williamson Hunt Smart (fl. 1847-1854) and Newton Reginald Smart (1831-1897) all clerked in their father's law office. In 1853, William Lynn Smart moved to Ontario. He was admitted as a student-at-law by the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1864, and was called to the Bar of the province in 1867. Smart became a notary public in 1871, and served as a Deputy Judge in Wentworth County, a position he held until 1874.
