Biographical Sketch
William Renwick Riddell was born on April 6th, 1852, in Hamilton Township, Canada West. Riddell studied at Victoria University in Cobourg, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree (1874), Bachelor of Science degree (1877), and an LLB degree (1878). He was admitted as a student-at-law by the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1878, and was called to the Bar in 1883. He practiced law in Cobourg before moving to Toronto in the 1890s. In 1891, Riddell was elected a bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada, a position he held until his appointment as a justice with the High Court (King's Bench) in 1906. He served as a justice with the High Court of Justice from 1913 to 1925, and as a justice with the Court of Appeal from 1925 to 1945.
 
 Riddell was a prolific writer on Canadian legal, constitutional, medical and social history, producing over 1200 articles, reviews, lectures, pamphlets and books. He received eleven honorary degrees throughout his life. Riddell died in Toronto on February 18th, 1945.
 
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of certificates, correspondence, research material, photographs and other material relating to the legal career and research interests of William Renwick Riddell. The research material relates to William Dummer Powell and to a medieval French folktale. The fonds also consists of several legal documents collected by Riddell. The fonds includes one sous-fonds, which contains the law practice records of Alexander Macdonell, a lawyer in Toronto during the mid-nineteenth century. The sous-fonds also includes research notes by Riddell on Macdonell.

Series consists of records relating to two research projects undertaken by William Renwick Riddell. The series includes source material and manuscripts relating to a biography of William Dummer Powell and a translation of a medieval French folktale.

Scope and Content
Sub-series consists of records relating to the writing of a biography of William Dummer Powell by William Renwick Riddell. Records include manuscripts of the biography, letters written during research and research, a family tree and typescripts of correspondence and a family tree. Riddell based his Life of William Dummer Powell, published by the Michigan Historical Society in 1924, on the typescript material.

Series consists of two portrait photographs believed to be of Walter Riddell and Mary Renwick, the parents of William Renwick Riddell. The two photographs appear to be two sections of one original photograph, that was cut in half at some point in time. Part of Riddell's left arm is visible on the photograph of Mary Renwick.
