Pre-examination Check

Purpose of the pre-examination check

The pre-examination check allows for the assessment of a candidate’s testing area, Internet, software, and hardware and is intended to reduce, as much as possible, the risk of any technical or testing area issues on the day of the licensing examination.

Before the pre-examination check

Candidates must download and install the secure browser However, candidates should not launch the secure browser software until instructed to do so by a proctor.

A pre-examination check communication will be sent to eligible candidates approximately 10 to 15 days prior to the first day of the first window of the licensing examination which will include a link to access the pre-examination check. Candidates who do not perform the pre-examination check by the deadline risk experiencing issues or delays on the day of the licensing examination, which may result in a deferral of the examination to a later sitting (e.g., from the summer sitting to the fall sitting).

* Candidates who launch the software before they are in a licensing examination can expect to see a white screen or a white screen with a spinning circle.

During the pre-examination check

The pre-examination check typically takes approximately 15 minutes.

Candidates should have photo identification ready.

During the pre-examination check, the proctor will do the following.
  1. Verify the candidate’s eligibility to perform the pre-examination check, by asking to see the candidates's ID.
  2. Provide the candidate with instructions to connect by webcam and smartphone camera.
  3. Scan the room and assess the room set-up to assist with ensuring that the testing area will meet the requirements on the day of licensing examination.
  4. Assess Internet speed and stability.
  5. Determine if the candidate’s hardware and software meet the minimum requirements (webcam, operating system, browser, etc.).
  6. Provide the candidate with instructions to access sample examination questions within the software so that the candidate can test navigation and functionality using the secure browser.

After the pre-examination check

Candidates should take note of the date and time they completed their pre-examination check. They will not receive any confirmation from the proctor or provider, but their information will be logged.

Examination Supports may provide further information if you are unable to meet the technical or testing area requirements.

Examination Requirements list the requirements that candidates must meet.

When is the pre-examination check done?

Candidates must conduct a pre-examination check in accordance with a communication sent through each eligible candidate’s online account by the deadline referenced in such communication.

The pre-examination check communication will be sent approximately 10 to 15 days prior to the first day of the first window of the licensing examination. Candidates who do not perform the pre-examination check by the deadline risk experiencing issues or delays on the day of the licensing examination, which may result in a deferral of the examination to a later sitting (e.g., from the summer sitting to the fall sitting).

Candidates are strongly encouraged to conduct the pre-examination check within the first week that it is available. Candidates who wait until close to the deadline and are unable to connect with a proctor because of high last-minute demand will not be given another opportunity to complete the pre-examination check.
