Former Bencher Philip Michael Epstein Invested into the Order of Canada

February 24, 2021

On Feb. 5, 2021, distinguished family law lawyer, former Law Society bencher and honorary LLD recipient Philip Michael Epstein, C.M., O.Ont., Q.C., was invested into the Order of Canada for his leadership in Canadian family law.

The news release from the Governor General of Canada cites the following reasons for Mr. Epstein’s appointment:

A staunch advocate of mediation and arbitration, Philip Epstein made an indelible mark on family law in Canada. Dean of the Canadian Family Law Bar, he has been counsel on precedent-setting cases in the Ontario Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada, and has significantly advanced child and spousal rights as a member of the federal committees overseeing support guidelines.

He co-founded the Ontario Superior Court of Justice Dispute Resolution Officer program, which has been replicated across the country. He is also an esteemed scholar with a rich publication legacy and has been a significant contributor to judicial education through the National Judicial Institute.

“Mr. Epstein is a most worthy recipient. He deserves recognition for his leadership in family law and his contributions to access to justice over the course of his career. As Chief Justice Wagner noted during the Ceremony, Mr. Epstein has improved the lives of families across the country,” said Treasurer Teresa Donnelly. “Personally, and on behalf of Convocation – sincere congratulations to Mr. Epstein on this outstanding achievement.”

The video of Mr. Epstein being invested into the Order of Canada by the Right Honourable Richard Wagner, P.C. Chief Justice of Canada is available on YouTube. The ceremony begins at the six-minute mark.

Mr. Epstein was presented with an honorary LLD in 2020. Read the Gazette article here.
