Looking for a will, legal document or file? Help is just a click away

August 24, 2021

Despite best efforts to keep legal affairs in a tidy state, often times a will or legal document is tucked away and forgotten about or lost altogether. When members of the public are searching for an important legal document, they often reach out to the Law Society for help.

That’s why the Law Society has developed LSO.ca/wills-files. This online resource guides members of the public through the process of how and where to search for a missing will, legal file or document.
It provides a step-by-step guide to searching for documents like:

  • wills and powers of attorney
  • real estate documents including mortgage, deed and title documents
  • court documents related to criminal, provincial offences or immigration matters
  • corporate minute books or corporate records.

In some cases, the Law Society may have information about the location of wills, legal files and documents from the former practices of lawyers or paralegals. When lawyers and paralegals stop practising, they are responsible for providing the Law Society with information regarding the location of their client files. Where they have done so, the trustee services department of the Law Society may have information about the successor paralegal or lawyer.

If this is the case, inquiries can be submitted through the convenient online form featured on LSO.ca/wills-files to request assistance from the Law Society.

Visit LSO.ca/wills-files for more information and to complete an online inquiry form.
