Finding a Lawyer or Paralegal

Finding a Lawyer or Paralegal

The Law Society has several services to help you find a legal professional to assist you with your legal problems.

Make sure you protect yourself and check our Lawyer and Paralegal Directory or contact the Law Society to confirm that the person you are thinking of hiring is a licensed legal professional.

Lawyer and Paralegal Directory

Visit the Law Society's online Lawyer and Paralegal Directory. The Lawyer and Paralegal Directory is a complete listing of legal professionals who are licensed by the Law Society to offer legal services in Ontario. The directory is searchable by name, city or postal code.

Each listing includes the practising status of the lawyer or paralegal. If a lawyer or paralegal has a discipline history, restrictions on his or her practice, or if there is a trusteeship, there will be information on this in the directory listing.

Law Society Referral Service

Another service provided by the Law Society is the Law Society Referral Service. The Law Society Referral Service will give you the name of a lawyer or paralegal within or near your community, who will provide a free consultation of up to 30 minutes to help you determine your rights and options.

Directory of Certified Specialists

The Law Society also provides a Directory of Certified Specialists. This directory includes lawyers who have met established standards of experience and knowledge in one or more specific areas of law.

For help deciding whether you need a lawyer or a paralegal, please see Choosing the Right Legal Professional. For more information contact the Client Service Centre.

Additional information available through the Law Society

You may contact the Law Society to confirm that an Ontario lawyer or licensed paralegal is entitled to provide legal services. This will help you make an informed decision on whether or not the person you are thinking of hiring is right for you.

We will tell you the lawyer or licensed paralegal status, including:

  • if s/he is currently providing legal services
  • whether there are restrictions on his/her practice
  • the nature of those restrictions, if applicable
  • whether the lawyer or paralegal's licence is currently suspended.

You may also ask about the licensee's discipline history, including:

  • findings of professional misconduct or conduct unbecoming a licensee
  • details of orders resulting from those findings
  • whether there are any licence restrictions.

Please note that limited information is available regarding discipline decisions prior to 1986.
