Reminder: deadline to apply for appointment to Hearing Panel

The Law Society is seeking three qualified paralegals for appointment to its Hearing Panel.

The panel considers conduct, capacity, competence and other regulatory matters relating to lawyers and paralegals, and includes benchers, as well as lawyer, paralegal and public appointees.  Full Story

Two-year review of CPD

A review of the first two years of the CPD Requirement is now underway and the Law Society is welcoming comments from licensees by March 31, 2013.

Last April, the Law Society conducted an interim review process, which included feedback from members and resulted in a number of changes.

Three Law Society Retention of Women in Private Practice initiatives were recently expanded to include paralegals:

- Career Coaching Program
- Contract Lawyers' and Paralegals' Registry
- Women's Online Resource Centre.

Law Society Referral Service

Every day, hundreds of people call the Law Society Referral Service (LSRS) seeking referrals to lawyers or paralegals because they need assistance with a legal issue.

Since the expansion of the service to include paralegals in May 2012, more than 140 paralegals have signed up. In 2012, the LSRS gave out 2,296 names of paralegals to members of the public looking for assistance and 1,843 referrals were provided.  Full Story

More accredited programs now offered

Accredited paralegal education programs are being offered at 38 college campuses across Ontario.

The Academy of Learning in Brampton, Fanshawe College in London and Connestoga College in Kitchener began offering programs in the fall of 2012.

Annual fee reminder

The deadline for payment of annual fees is 5 p.m., April 1, 2013.

Paralegals who fail to pay their annual fees by this deadline will be subject to a late fee of $100, as well as possible administrative suspension.

CPD training for new members

Are you a newly licensed paralegal?

Paralegals who provide legal services are required to complete12 Hours of CPD per calendar year, with a minimum of three Professionalism Hours.

Upcoming public education equality events

Book your calendars to attend one or more of the Law Society’s upcoming Public Education Equality and Rule of Law events.

Held throughout the year, these programs offer learning and networking opportunities and celebrate diversity and excellence in the legal profession.

The series includes panel discussions, public forums, lectures, seminars, workshops and consultations and are held in partnership with other legal organizations, diverse community groups, academic institutions, governments, and nongovernmental organizations.
