Obtain a Certificate of Standing

A Certificate of Standing is a detailed document issued by the Law Society of Ontario, which outlines full details about a licensee’s status, regulatory history and ongoing complaints and investigations, if any. A Certificate of Standing may be required by licensees for mobility or employment purposes in order to confirm whether the licensee is entitled to practise law or provide legal services in Ontario.

The cost for a Certificate of Standing is $50.00 (plus taxes). The cost for an additional copy is $10.00 (plus taxes). It may take up to ten business days to process a Certificate of Standing. The cost of shipping is not included. A Certificate of Standing will not be prepared and released to a third party without the subject licensee’s prior written authorization. Please note that during the COVID-19 pandemic, all Certificates of Standing will be sent electronically by email. If you require a hard copy, please indicate the reason why in the notes section when making your purchase.

A Certificate of Standing may be ordered by a licensee through the Law Society Portal. A third party may order a Certificate of Standing through the Law Society Store. A third party authorization form is available through the Law Society Store. If you have any questions, please contact the Membership Services department by email at records@lso.ca
